Great Falls Real Estate Information

Nestled away in northern Virginia, the city of Great Falls is situated in Fairfax County. Originally named Forestville, Great Falls has become a traditional bedroom community outside of Washington DC. Featuring lush forestry, dynamic water pathways, and a diversity of people, Great Falls and its almost 10,000 residents find the town to be a great retreat from hectic city life. Despite the seclusion and isolation that makes Great Falls so peaceful and quiet, two major shopping areas, Village Center and Great Falls Center, are convenient for residents and offer a wide selection of places to shop and complete errands. As part of the area’s rich heritage, George Washington was involved with building a canal around the falls on Virginia side, called the Patowmack Canal. Although the project was a failure, remnants of the canal and of a village around the canal are still scattered around Great Falls’ many parks.

Great Falls Park, overlooking the Great Falls of the Potomac River, is one of the area’s best attractions and is used by locals and visitors thousands of times each year. With a spectacular view of the Potomac, long jogging paths, grassy fields, and a variety of other recreational facilities commemorate the great outdoors and promote community activity and healthy lifestyles. The islands in the middle of the Potomac are especially gorgeous and eye-catching in the evening sunset. Besides Great Falls Park, Northern Virginia Regional Park and River Bend County Park are popular recreation and gathering areas and are especially busy on the weekends.

Great Falls’ unique Village Green hosts a number of community celebrations around Easter, Fourth of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and other holidays. From Easter egg hunts to tree decorating and fireworks displays, the residents of Great Falls enjoy partying with each other – a trait especially rare of cities like Great Falls. On the weekends, Lowes Island Club and River Bend Country Club are quite popular with local golfers. Additionally, Northern Virginia Regional Park, Windermere Park, Great Falls Grange Park, Turner Farm Park, Greater Falls Nike Park, and Lexington Estate Park host youth sports leagues, tournaments, and a number of family day events.
