Herndon Real Estate Information

The charming community of Herndon has a population of almost 22,000 people and is one of the top three largest cities in Fairfax County. Named after naval explorer and author William Lewis Herndon, the city was officially founded in 1858. Because of its distance from metropolitan Washington, DC, Herndon has carved its own niche as a hub of dairy farming and vacation spot for area residents. As a part of the so-called Dulles Technology Corridor, also known as the Netplex, several global corporations are located in or around Herndon, including AOL, Verizon Business, Volkswagen of America, Airbus North America, and Network Solutions. Located just a few miles east of Washington’s Dulles International Airport, Herndon’s residents enjoy easy access to flights around the world. The unique Center for Innovative Technology was built between Herndon and the Dulles International Airport.

A Norfolk Southern Railway caboose was recently added to the old Alexandria, Loudoun and Hampshire Railroad station in town. The Herndon Depot Museum and iconic caboose attract thousands of visitors each year and celebrates the original town that has slowly faded into the suburban countryside that Herndon is today. The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center of the National Air and Space Museum, Frying Pan Park, Sully Plantation, Reston Town Center, Mount Vernon, and Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts are all within a short drive from Herndon although they are not located within the city.

The fairly excellent Fairfax County Public Schools serves Herndon extensively with seven elementary schools feeding a single middle and high school. The Herndon community is also known to rally around a number of annual events that call neighbors together to share in the spirit of the city, Virginia, and the region. Taste of the Town, in April, is a showcase of the Arts and Friday Night Live! is a popular summer series that includes outdoor movies, a capella singers, a variety of outdoor activities, and cooking. The Herndon Festival and Fourth of July Celebration are also popular. Even more exciting is the collection of events held in September, including a Labor Day Jazz Festival, Motorcycle Poker Run, and the exclusive NatureFest Celebration.
