Lorton Real Estate Information

The city of Lorton is home to 17,800 people and is classified as a census-designated place in Fairfax County. Lorton’s English roots gave birth to its name after a town in the Lake District Park in England. The area’s interesting past has seen it utilized as a site for a District of Columbia correctional facility that imprisoned women who took part in the Women’s Suffrage Movement, a Nike missile site until 1973, and major trade center.

Today, Lorton is one of two stations that takes part in Amtrak’s Auto Train serve that allows passengers to bring their vehicles with them. This historic past has led to the creation of several historic sites within Lorton, including Gunston Hall, George Mason's Home, Pohick Church with George Washington's box, Belvoir, and now Fort Belvoir Army Corps of Engineer base, and Cranford Church. Woodlawn Plantation and Mount Venon are not located in Lorton but are very popular attractions nearby for both visitors and Lorton residents.

Although the correctional facility is no longer in use, significant commercial development has occurred in its place. The Gunston Plaza Shopping Center brings together several business offices, grocery stores, restaurants, a gymnasium, a senior facility, and a number of boutique stores and a United States post office. A number of town centers and strip malls have recently sprung up around Lorton and add coffee shops, salons, and a few contemporary cuisine restaurants to the commercial side of Lorton.

The Fairfax Public School System offers a number of exceptional education options to K-6 students in Lorton through its five elementary campuses in Lorton. Students in grades 7-12 can attend secondary schools in nearby Hayfield or South County, both of which are just a few minutes away. Davison Army Airfield is just a few miles northeast and can be easily reached on the I-95 north. For those looking to escape urban life, Occoguan Bay National Wildlife Refuge, Belmont Bay, Ospreys Golf Club at Belmont Bay, Mason Neck State Park, Pohick Bay Golf Course, and Pohick Bay Regional Park are all attractive options for both the individual and whole family.
