Several well-known Washington personalities like Richard Cheney, Pat Buchanan, Ted Kennedy, Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas, and Robert Zoellick all reside within the neighborhoods of McLean.

The Central Intelligence’s main campus is also just a few minutes away.

According to the town’s history, it is named after John Roll McLean, the former publisher and owner of the famous Washington Post. Apparently, he named the local train station after himself when he funded the railroad’s expansion through the area. Langley High School and McLean High School, part of the Fairfax County Public School System, offer top-rate educations and work in tandem with James Fenimore Cooper Middle School and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Middle School. Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, the top high school in the nation according to US News and World report, is also located in McLean and is frequented by a number of high profile politician’s offspring. The nature of McLean’s residents has led to the development of a number of elite and prestigious private institutions in McLean that are quite popular.

It is not uncommon to see public figures running on the streets of McLean or in the parks that are sprinkled around the city. Pimmit Bend Park, McLean Central Park, Langley Fork Park, Dranesville District Park, and Dead Run Stream Park are the more frequented facilities.
